510 killed in 527 road crashes in April: Jatri Kalyan Samity

At least 510 people were killed and 1,268 others injured in 527 road accidents across Bangladesh in April, according to a report by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity.The passenger welfare platform said 54 railway accidents were also recorded during the month, leaving 49 people dead and 11 injured. Four people were killed in five waterway accidents.Altogether, 563 people were killed and 1,279 injured in 586 accidents on roads, railways and waterways in April, the organisation said in the report sent to the media by its Secretary General Md Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury on Wednesday.

The organisation said its Accident Monitoring Cell prepared the report by reviewing media reports. It said the actual number of casualties could be several times higher as many accidents do not make it into newspapers.

Chattogram division recorded the highest number of road crashes, with 135 accidents leaving 137 people dead and 263 injured. Mymensingh division recorded the lowest number, with 17 road accidents killing 18 people and injuring 64 others.

Among those involved in road crashes were eight members of law enforcement agencies, 106 drivers, 82 pedestrians, 47 transport workers, 81 students, 12 teachers, 63 women, 54 children, three doctors, one journalist, one lawyer and nine leaders and activists of political parties.

The dead included one police member, one air force member, two BGB members, three doctors, 99 drivers of different vehicles, 82 pedestrians, 52 women, 47 children, 56 students, 25 transport workers, five teachers, one lawyer, one journalist and eight political activists.

According to the report, 38.51 percent of the accidents occurred on national highways, 31.49 percent on regional highways and 22.96 percent on feeder roads.

Of the total crashes, 5.69 percent occurred in Dhaka city, 0.75 percent in Chattogram city and 0.56 percent at railway crossings.
